“Real” Snow
It’s coming. It’s really coming. At least that’s what every weather person on every channel here in Green Bay is saying. Have I spoken about the meteorologists here yet? If not then WOW. People here sure get excited about the weather.
Each news broadcast starts and finishes with a weather update. They all have several weather updates during the program aswell.
One station has the “Severe Weather Index” another has the “Storm Team” another has “Storm Centre”. Though the names might be different the one thing that remains the same is their commitment to having a weather break every 30 seconds or so. I kind of get the feeling they’re trying to outdo each other sometimes with their over the top presentations, annotations and concerned faces. I know the weather is serious business around these parts but the animated presentation, like some of the sports broadcasters is pretty hard to watch at times.
Since yesterday Kelly and I have been looking out the window waiting for the storm to come. We don’t even know what a “storm” means by the way. Back home storms involve driving rain, thunder, lightning and winds that could blow the milk right out of your coffee. If that’s what is on the way then I’m not quite sure I want to be a part of it.
Slowly the snow started to fall, at noon just as predicted. This pic was taken just after 530. As the white covered all before us neither Kelly or I could believe how beautiful it was. Snow doesn’t fall we learned today. It floats, gently to the ground as soft as can be. Before we knew it the colours of everything else that surrounded us had turned white. It was like a changing of the guard.
As the night wore on the snow continued and we were both stunned for the most part. The plough man arrived at about 1030 or so as the driveway into our apartment was completely covered. He shovelled the snow right outside of our window giving us something to remember the fall by.
The funniest part about the plough man was that we kept staring at him out of the window. When you have never seen a snow plough before believe me, your first time is pretty cool.
We decided to go out and experience the night for ourselves at that point. The plough man, like everybody else must have thought we were bloody crazy. There we were, 2 grown adults laughing at the first real snowfall of the season. Picking it up, running our fingers through it and trying to catch the falling snow on our tongues.
We kept looking at the hoods on our jackets to see how the snow was collecting, watching it fall in the bright of the street lights and taking photos and videos like a couple that had never seen snow before. Could you imagine? Two 30 year olds outside, in the snow, with a camera, laughing their heads off. That was us.
The one thing that amazed us most was the light of the night sky. It wasn’t dark at all. We figured that was because of the ground being white all of a sudden. That was the easily one of the more spectacular parts of the night. It was like dusk more than it was 1030 and we still talk about it now.
We can’t wait to get the boys out into it tomorrow.
