“Aussieee” The Snowman
What an awesome day.
Before I get into it we’d just like to wish Kel’s Mum, known to us as a Nanny, a very happy birthday. It’s too bad we’re not all there to enjoy the warm sun and seafood lunch that we know you’re getting ready to hook into too.
So today is the morning after our first 8 inch snowfall. Homecoming as a first experience was a real eye opener. Halloween was a ton of fun and Thanksgiving was something we’d all love to experience again.
The snow is something else all together. Having lived today the way we did we know that frolicking in the snow is something we will definitely do again.
By now you will all know that Kelly (but for a few days) and I hadn’t seen snow before. Where we’re from it doesn’t snow at all. Having said that it does snow about 4 hours south of Sydney but for all of the years we’ve been together we have never ventured down there. It’ll be on next year’s calendar without doubt.
Having never taken the boys out in such cold temperatures we proceeded to get them ready for their first trip into this new winter wonderland. Man what a job. It’s not easy getting kids ready to play outside but the end result is certainly worth it.
We had our friend Kathy come over with her little snow guides Tyler and Katie. This help was very much needed as she assisted with the dressing requirements and stupid questions that only beach living Aussies could ask.
Once the dressing was complete we were outside to play for the first time. We rolled snowballs, made snow angels and attempted to run and slide through the fluffly ground covering that was oh so inviting. Mental note: The snow on top might be soft but the concrete basketball court underneath is still as hard and as course as a concrete basketball court should be. My elbows taught me that little lesson.
First item on the agenda was to build a snowman. Thankfully Kathy had come prepared ‘cause we had no idea what to do. With Tyler rolling the bases and Katie preparing the dressings we knew we were in good hands. Ben absolutely loved this. He got to place the carrot nose and the sticks for arms. It was great fun.
Luc was a little less impressed. He loved being outside for a few minutes but wore tired of it quite quickly. I think it had something to do with the fact he had his Maggie Simpson inspired snow star on and the restricted movement was getting to him. Fair enough too. He was looking more and more like a big blue Michelin Man every time we looked at him. Kelly and I took turns in watching him inside where he was very happy with Baby Einstein on TV and a teething rusk to munch on.
Next was to slide down the mound of snow left by our friend the plough man. The first few turns were a little rougher than expected. Once we’d carved a little ramp to slide down though it was awesome. I definitely want to find a massive hill to sled down and soon. It was just like a waterslide with lots of clothes, gloves and ice. Man the cold can hurt your eyes though. Where were my Olympic goggles when I needed them?
Last but not least was a good ol’ fashioned snowball fight. What else do you do when you have a 10 year old pelting you with every chance he had? I tried to make the biggest possible snowball I could but found out very quickly that the bigger they are the harder they are to throw. After that we dug a few holes, watched Ben run around in his new world and face planted the snow just to see how it felt. It stung.
We have great couple of months ahead if this is how the weather is going to be.
P.S. After reading the first comment from Carol i need to add that we did come in from playing and enjoy warm cups of cocoa (thankyou again Kathy) and freshly baked cookies (thankyou Kel). What a great way to finish the day and warm you right back up again. How did i forget to add that?
