Taking Stock
It has hit home today and last night for that matter that family comes first.
God bless our boys for being here with no idea of why or for how long. We’re talking no regular creature comforts; toys, bikes, DVD’s or anything they’ve become used to back home. Friends, Family and Grandparents included. We did bring a few toys and movies for them and have bought some here aswell but, as I’m sure you can all attest, there’s no place like home.
It’s the same for Kelly too. The trip of a lifetime has been a wonderful experience for the both of us so far. Missing regular, day-to-day things like the car, local shops, friends and especially family has hit home how easily it is to take for granted the way that we live every single day of our lives. Whilst change is a good thing, it’s the routine that makes our family, and I’m sure every other family in the world, who we are. Adjusting to a change there is the most important change of all.
On with today.
As I’ve said re: my game day experience, the whole thing seemed to quite literally fly by. So too has the idea that so many people have either read our story, been told about our story or stumbled across our story online thanks to links we had no idea even existed. In the last few days we have received hundreds of emails from Green Bay to towns and cities all over mainland USA. We have been contacted from people in such countries as Canada, Mexico, Germany, Russia and this blog is being read by people in countries too many to mention.
If that doesn’t lay testament to the passion felt by Packers fans all over the world then nothing will. As I’ve said to many people in the last few days, this team means no more to me than it does to millions of others both here and abroad. It has a story, a history and a fan base that I’m certain other franchises (not all I know) would be happy to take just half of.
Green Bay and Wisconsin as a whole is a special place full of special people who are so loyal to this team (you know this already I know). The proof is that when strangers like us pop-in for the season we are welcomed with a sort of excitement we could never have imagined in our wildest dreams.
With regards to the emails that we have received both Kelly and I are gob-smacked (Aussie for surprised) by them. We appreciate all of the good wishes, the jokes, the taunts and the offers that have come our way. To think that we have been here only one week is remarkable; it feels like a heck of alot longer.
I did an interview with Chuck on AM 1570 “The Score” this afternoon. What a whirlwind that was. It was a good laugh though and again we have heard from people that were listening at the time. Thankyou for what you’ve had to say re: our little adventure.
The highlight, from a family view point of our stay in Green Bay so far, came tonight in a visit with some friends we made just last week. With a beautiful home, massive yard and children identical in our age to our own we were made to feel so welcome. That and the boys got to play with as many toys as they are used to back home which made for some well needed energy burning. This provided a nice change from what has become a really crazy week and a good chance for Kel to sit down and have a normal, adult conversation without having to chase children through a bar, foyer or other heavily populated public place.
