Hiccup #1: Visa’s

Museum Train Station, Sydney City.

We made an appointment (14 September) with the US Consulate to obtain our visas this morning after somewhat of a surprise. You see, we began planning our trip a little something like this: we’re taking a holiday, we’re Australian, Americans and Australians are friends, we’ll see you there when we like for as long as we like, what’s the big deal? Well, it turns out the big deal is you can’t just rock up to the USA and say “Hi we’re Australian and we’re going to stay a while” which I guess, in hindsight, probably makes sense.

For us though it means that with 5 weeks or so before we plan on leaving we have to make a booking to interview at the US Consulate and state our case for a tourist visa. What wasn’t a problem initially turned into a very big one quite quickly. I go online to book our interview time, after being told there is usually a 10 day delay and September 14th is the soonest we can get in. Seeing as the Packers host the Eagles in week 1 on September 9 you can imagine how this made us feel.

Suffice to say after a day of trying to figure this out and still not interviewing until after the season had started I begin to wonder if I should in fact start looking for a new job and searching for a new house.
