Halloween Approaching
I can’t believe that Halloween is such a big thing here. It has never really been embraced back home and usually, we do everything you guys do. This one though, seems to have stumbled somewhere along the way. (This picture was as we were leaving Madison on our way back from the Badgers game but the more time we spend out and about the more houses we see just like it.
I am amazed at the size of this occasion. It’s as big Christmas so far as I’m concerned. People decorate their houses, have Halloween parties and dress up to be a part of it all. There are haunted houses, boo zoo’s and spooktacular’s everywhere. The shops even separate their scary DVD’s from their regular ones so that people can find them easier. Oh and pumpkins? Don’t even get me started on the pumpkins. They seem to be reproducing quicker than rabbits around here. You see 3 pumpkins on the street, do a lap of the block and all of a sudden there are 4. They do make the place look really good though.
The whole Halloween thing is very foreign to us. I mean, the thought of freaking out a 3 year old with blood filled skulls, skeletons and vampires isn’t really something I had ever thought of doing. But it doesn’t seem to bother anyone. I think that’s pretty cool too.
Now talk about a money spinner. There isn’t a single store at the mall that isn’t decorated with some sort of Halloween fare. Most of them have Halloween decorations for sale, usually spilling out of the front door. See, we bought a couple of bears today and low and behold we dressed them in Halloween gear. Suckers..... There are (adult) costumes all over the place and they cost like $50. I thought that was really expensive. Then I spoke to an attendant at one of the shops and by the time she adds make-up, accessories and anything else she thinks she’ll need it’ll end up costing her at least $100. Now that’s alot of Skittles.

Anyway, tonight was Ben’s first chance to dress up as a pirate. Luc and I, thanks to his cold stayed back and had a quite little night together. Kelly, with our friends Amy and Jamie took all 4 boys (they have 3) to a Boo Bash in the Appleton City Centre and to say they had fun would be a massive understatement. They trick or treated (Ben’s new favourite phrase), ran like crazy and expelled all of the energy they had to ensure a good night’s sleep for all.
Ben, even if he did say so himself (and he did) looked absolutely gorgeous. He was so excited to have his costume on finally. For days he had been asking to wear it so to have him in it finally was really nice to see. He’s also stinging to start carving the few pumpkins that we have bought and been given. We’re saving those for next week though which we are all looking very forward to.
